Diagnosing the Fault Before Replacing Parts
I was recently called to a customer who believed the multipoint locking mechanism in his uPVC door had failed.
He explained that the door wasn't operating properly and thought the entire mechanism would need replacing.
Before replacing any parts, I carried out a full inspection of the door and locking system.
Almost immediately, it became clear that the mechanism wasn't the problem at all.
The Lock Was Working Perfectly
With the door open, I tested the multipoint locking mechanism through its full range of movement.
The gearbox operated correctly.
The locking points travelled freely.
The euro cylinder worked smoothly.
There was no indication that the mechanism required replacement.
Instead, the fault was much simpler.
The Real Problem
The door handles had simply reached the end of their working life.
Over time, the internal spring cassettes had weakened and the lever mechanism inside the backplate had become worn. This caused the handles to feel loose and prevented them from returning properly after use.
It's a common problem on doors that have seen years of daily use.
From the outside, worn handles can easily be mistaken for a faulty gearbox or broken locking mechanism, which is why it's important to diagnose the fault rather than assume which part has failed.
A Much More Cost-Effective Repair
Instead of replacing a perfectly good multipoint locking mechanism, I fitted a new set of heavy-duty sprung black handles.
The stronger spring cassettes returned the levers firmly to their horizontal position, while the new handles eliminated the excessive movement caused by the worn backplates.
The black finish also complemented the appearance of the door, giving it a fresh new look as well as restoring its operation.
Final Checks
With the new handles fitted, I tested the door several times.
The handles returned positively after every operation.
The locking mechanism worked exactly as it should.
I also checked the alignment of the door to ensure there wasn't any unnecessary strain being placed on the lock.
Everything operated smoothly and without resistance.
The Right Diagnosis Saves Money
This job is a good example of why a proper diagnosis is so important.
The customer was convinced the multipoint locking mechanism had failed and was expecting a much more expensive repair. In reality, the mechanism was in excellent condition and only the handles needed replacing.
By identifying the actual fault, I was able to carry out a simpler, more cost-effective repair while avoiding the unnecessary replacement of perfectly serviceable parts.
Door Handle or Lock Problem?
If your uPVC or composite door has loose handles, drooping levers or has become difficult to operate, it doesn't automatically mean the multipoint lock has failed. Worn handles, tired spring cassettes and loose backplates can produce symptoms that are very similar to a faulty gearbox. A proper inspection will identify the real cause, ensuring only the parts that genuinely need replacing are changed.
