If the hooks, rollers, deadbolts or latch on your multipoint lock aren't fully retracting when you press the handle down, it's a problem that shouldn't be ignored. • The latch not retracting fully.
• The handle feeling loose or floppy.
• The key operating inconsistently.

Broken Internal Springs

Many multipoint locks rely on internal springs to return components to their correct position.

Seized Locking Points

Hooks, rollers and deadbolts should move freely every time the handle is operated.

Over time they can become affected by dirt, corrosion, dried lubricant or general wear. As resistance increases, the mechanism has to work harder and may struggle to retract the locking points completely.

Regular servicing can often prevent this type of wear developing.

Door Alignment Problems

A dropped or misaligned door is another common cause.

When the locking points constantly rub against the keeps on the frame, unnecessary strain is transferred through the entire locking mechanism.

Typical signs include:

• The door catching the frame.
• Difficulty lifting the handle.
• The lock working better with the door open.
• Scrape marks around the keeps.

Damaged Hooks or Rollers

Occasionally the locking points themselves become worn or damaged.

Poor Quality Repair Mechanisms

Most multipoint locks receive very little maintenance during their lifetime.

Keeping the hooks, rollers, deadbolts and latch clean and lubricated with a suitable product helps them move freely and reduces unnecessary strain on the gearbox.

Simple maintenance can significantly extend the life of the locking mechanism.

Don't Ignore the Problem

If the locking points aren't retracting fully, continuing to use the door can lead to further damage.

Extra strain may eventually cause:

• Frame damage.
• Broken handles.
• Gearbox failure.
• Difficulty opening the door.
• A complete lockout.

The earlier the fault is diagnosed, the easier and more cost-effective the repair is likely to be.

Most Multipoint Lock Problems Can Be Repaired
