Lost Keys and Peace of Mind

I was recently called to a tenement flat to replace the front door lock after the customer had lost their keys.

Although there was no evidence that the keys had been stolen or that anyone knew where they belonged, replacing the lock was the sensible option. When keys are lost, you can never be certain who may eventually find them, so fitting a new lock provides valuable peace of mind.

A Closer Look at the Existing Lock

The entrance door was fitted with:

• Door handles.
• A mortice euro lock case.
• A snap-resistant euro cylinder.

At first glance, it appeared the door already had a good quality security cylinder fitted.

However, a closer inspection revealed a significant problem.

The Wrong Size Cylinder

Although the cylinder was advertised as snap-resistant, it was the wrong size for the door.

It projected approximately 20mm beyond the outside handle.

This is a common installation mistake.

Snap-resistant cylinders are designed to sacrifice a controlled section of the lock if attacked. This sacrificial section helps protect the internal locking mechanism from being compromised.

However, if too much of the cylinder protrudes beyond the handle, an intruder may be able to grip the exposed section directly. This can significantly reduce the effectiveness of the cylinder's built-in security features.

A high-security lock can only provide the protection it was designed for if it is fitted correctly.

Fitting the Correct Lock

The existing cylinder was removed and replaced with a correctly sized snap-resistant euro cylinder, ensuring that it sat neatly within the door furniture with minimal projection.

The new lock was supplied with five keys, allowing the customer to replace every copy that had been lost.

Correct sizing not only improves security but also gives the installation a much neater appearance.

Final Testing

Once the new cylinder was installed, I tested the lock several times.

The key operated smoothly from both sides.

The cylinder sat correctly within the handles.

The locking mechanism engaged and disengaged without resistance.

Everything worked exactly as it should.

Why Cylinder Size Matters

Many homeowners focus on buying a high-security lock but don't realise that the size of the cylinder is just as important.

An incorrectly sized euro cylinder can leave unnecessary amounts of the lock exposed, potentially making it easier to attack. Selecting the correct length allows the cylinder to work alongside the door handles and locking system as intended, providing the best possible level of protection.
