A Door That Wouldn't Open

I was recently called to a customer whose front door had jammed shut.

Although they still had their keys, the door simply wouldn't open. The key turned as it should, but the locking mechanism failed to release, leaving them unable to use the door.

Considering the door was less than ten years old, it wasn't something they expected to happen.

My first priority was to get the door open without causing any unnecessary damage.

Fortunately, I was able to gain entry quickly using non-destructive techniques, leaving both the door and frame completely intact.

Showing the Customer the Fault

Once the door was open, I carried out a full inspection of the locking mechanism.

When the handles were pressed down, the latch failed to retract.

I showed this to the customer before removing any parts.

I always think it's important to explain what's gone wrong and show the fault where possible. It helps customers understand exactly why the door has failed and gives them confidence that only the parts that genuinely need replacing are being changed.

Replacing the Gearbox

After removing the handles, euro cylinder and multipoint locking mechanism, I identified the gearbox as the faulty component.

The worn gearbox was replaced with a new one before the mechanism was thoroughly tested outside the door to ensure it was operating correctly.

Once I was satisfied everything worked as it should, I reassembled the complete locking mechanism and fitted it back into the door.

Another Issue Became Apparent

With the repair complete, I closed the door for a final test.

Although it now locked and unlocked successfully, something still wasn't quite right.

The locking points were catching on the frame keeps as the handle was lifted.

While the door technically worked, it was placing unnecessary strain on the new gearbox.

Leaving it like this would almost certainly shorten the life of the new mechanism.

Realigning the Door

The final stage of the repair was to realign the door.

By making careful adjustments, I ensured there was the correct clearance between the locking points and the keeps, allowing the mechanism to operate freely instead of working against the frame.

Once adjusted, the handle lifted much more smoothly and the locking points engaged cleanly, pulling the door firmly against the weather seals without excessive force.

The difference in operation was immediately noticeable.

Helping the Customer Save Money

Before leaving, I showed the customer how the door could be adjusted in the future if it moved slightly over time.

To make things even easier, I marked the adjustment point so they had a simple reference should a minor adjustment ever be needed.

It's a small thing, but it could save them the cost of a future call-out for a simple tweak.

Of course, if the door ever developed a more serious problem, I'd always recommend having it professionally inspected, but for minor seasonal movement they now knew exactly what to look for.

More Than Just Replacing Parts

This repair is a good example of why simply replacing the failed component isn't always enough.

The gearbox had failed, but the underlying door alignment was also contributing to the problem. Replacing the gearbox without correcting the alignment would have left unnecessary strain on the new part and increased the likelihood of another failure.

By repairing the fault, realigning the door and explaining how to make small future adjustments, the customer was left with a door that operated smoothly and the knowledge to help keep it that way.
