Gearbox Replacement Restores Faulty uPVC Door in G71

A Door That Wouldn't Lock

I was called out yesterday to a property in G71 where the homeowner had a uPVC door that would no longer lock properly.

At first glance, it looked like the door handles had broken. They were hanging down and weren't returning to their normal horizontal position after being operated. It's a common symptom that often leads people to believe the handles themselves have failed.

However, appearances can be deceptive.

Looking Beyond the Obvious

Before replacing any parts, I carried out my usual checks to identify the actual cause of the problem.

Although the handles appeared to be at fault, the symptoms pointed towards a failed gearbox inside the multipoint locking mechanism.

The gearbox is responsible for transferring movement from the handles to the locking points. When it fails internally, the handles often stop working correctly, even though they may still be perfectly serviceable.

Replacing the handles alone wouldn't have solved the problem.

Replacing the Faulty Gearbox

After removing the handles and euro cylinder, I took the multipoint locking mechanism out of the door.

The faulty gearbox was removed and replaced with a new compatible gearbox.

Before putting the mechanism back into the door, I tested it on the bench to make sure all the moving parts operated correctly and that the hooks and locking points travelled smoothly.

Once I was satisfied everything was working as it should, I refitted the mechanism into the door.

Upgrading the Lock

While carrying out the repair, I also supplied and fitted a new snap-resistant euro cylinder, complete with five keys.

Upgrading to a modern snap-resistant lock provides improved protection against one of the most common methods of attack used on euro cylinder locks, while also giving the customer a smooth, reliable locking system.

Everything Working Again

With the new gearbox and lock installed, I refitted the original handles.

Immediately, they returned to their proper horizontal position, confirming that the handles themselves had never been the problem.

The door was then fully tested several times.

The handle lifted smoothly.

The locking points engaged correctly.

The key turned freely.

The door locked and unlocked exactly as it should.

Correct Diagnosis Saves Time and Money

This repair highlights why diagnosing the fault is just as important as replacing parts.

It's easy to assume that drooping handles mean the handles have broken, but in many cases the real culprit is the gearbox hidden inside the multipoint locking mechanism.

Replacing the correct component restores the door to full working order and avoids unnecessary expense on parts that don't actually need replacing.
