I was called out to a property in Paisley where the customer was having problems with their Winkhaus multipoint locking mechanism. The door had become increasingly difficult to lock because the hooks were no longer fully retracting when the handles were depressed. As a result, the hooks were catching the frame every time the door was opened and closed, damaging the frame and making the door harder to operate.

After inspecting the door, I quickly identified the problem as a failed Winkhaus gearbox. While many people are told that the entire locking mechanism needs replacing, that isn't always the case.

A Failed Gearbox Doesn't Always Mean a New Mechanism

Unlike many other multipoint locks, Winkhaus gearboxes are riveted into the mechanism rather than being designed for straightforward replacement.

Because of this, many locksmiths and door companies recommend replacing the complete locking mechanism.

Saving the Customer Money

Repairing the original mechanism can result in substantial savings.

Complete Winkhaus mechanisms can be expensive, and many older versions are now obsolete or difficult to source.

In some cases, homeowners are even advised that the only solution is to replace the entire door.

For owners of flats and tenement properties, this can become particularly expensive because current regulations may require a replacement fire-rated entrance door, with costs often starting at around £2,000 before installation.

Carrying Out the Repair

To complete the repair, I removed the handles, lock cylinder and the complete locking mechanism from the door.

The failed gearbox was carefully removed before a genuine replacement gearbox was fitted. The mechanism was then reassembled and fully tested to ensure everything operated correctly before being refitted into the door.

Rather than replacing an expensive locking mechanism, the repair focused only on the failed component, preserving the original factory-fitted mechanism.

Improving the Security

While the door was dismantled, I also upgraded the existing lock cylinder to one of my Snap-Safe anti-snap cylinders, giving the customer improved protection against modern methods of attack.

This meant the customer not only received a fully functioning lock but also benefited from a worthwhile security upgrade at the same time.

Final Adjustments

Once the mechanism had been reinstalled, further testing confirmed the hooks were now fully retracting as designed.

I then carried out minor adjustments to the frame and keeps to ensure every locking point engaged smoothly without resistance.

Once the work was complete:

• The hooks fully retracted.

• The locking points engaged correctly.
• The frame was no longer being damaged.
• The door was easier to lock and unlock.
• Security was improved with a new anti-snap cylinder.

The customer tested the door before I left and was delighted with the result.

Repair Before You Replace

This repair demonstrates why it's worth seeking specialist advice before replacing an expensive multipoint locking mechanism or even an entire door. A failed Winkhaus gearbox doesn't automatically mean the complete mechanism has to be replaced.
