Letterbox Replacement in Bearsden: A Properly Fitted Upgrade for a uPVC Door

A Letterbox Replacement in Bearsden

The customer contacted A.L.S. Locksmiths through WhatsApp to enquire about replacing a letterbox and changing the lock at their property in Bearsden.

Once the requirements had been established, I ordered the replacement letterbox so that the correct component would be available for the installation.

When it arrived, I attended the property to carry out the work.

Although replacing a letterbox might appear to be a simple job, getting a good result involves more than removing the old fitting and screwing a new one into place.

The opening needs to suit the replacement, the fixing arrangement must be appropriate for the door, and the finished fitting should sit neatly against the door surface.

Removing the Old Letterbox

The first step was to remove the existing letterbox.

Once it was off, I could see that the original fitting had effectively been stuck into place and held with short screws. Silicone had also been used around the fitting.

This wasn't the type of installation I wanted to replicate.

A letterbox should be secured using its intended fixing arrangement, with the two sections properly connected and tightened against the door.

After removing the old letterbox, I cleaned away the remaining silicone and prepared the opening for the new fitting.

This provided a clean surface and allowed me to assess whether the existing cut-out was suitable for the replacement.

Preparing the Opening for the New Letterbox

With the opening cleaned, I offered up the replacement letterbox to check how it fitted.

The existing opening needed to be enlarged slightly in certain areas to accommodate the new fitting.

I marked where the adjustments were required before carefully opening up the cut-out.

This stage needed care. Removing too much material could leave unnecessary gaps around the letterbox or compromise the finish.

Once the opening had been adjusted, I dry-fitted the new letterbox.

Dry-fitting allows the installer to check the position, fit and alignment before securing everything permanently. It also helps identify any areas that need further adjustment while changes can still be made easily.

Once I was satisfied with the fit, I moved on to securing the new letterbox.

Fitting the Two-Piece Letterbox

The replacement letterbox had a two-piece design.

One section fitted into the other, with the two parts secured together through the door using connecting bolts.

When tightened, the bolts pulled the two sections firmly against the door, creating a secure and neat installation.

However, there was one issue with the supplied fixings: the bolts were too long for the thickness of the door.

Leaving them at their original length would not have been appropriate for this installation.

I measured and shortened the bolts to the correct length, ensuring that the two sections could be tightened together properly without excess bolt length interfering with the fitting.

Once the bolts had been adjusted, I secured the letterbox tightly against the door.

The Importance of Getting the Details Right

The difference between a poor installation and a professional finish often comes down to details such as these.

A letterbox might be the correct model, but that doesn't guarantee it will fit perfectly into an existing opening.

The cut-out may need minor adjustments. The fixing bolts may need shortening. The door surface needs to be clean, and the two sections need to sit correctly against each other.

Taking the time to deal with these details produces a better result than simply forcing the new fitting into place.

In this case, the opening was prepared carefully, the letterbox was checked before final installation and the fixings were adjusted to suit the door.

The Finished Result

Once the letterbox had been secured, the finished installation looked smart and tidy.

The new letterbox sat neatly against the door and complemented its appearance.

Rather than relying on the improvised fixing arrangement used previously, the replacement was secured using its own two-piece design and correctly sized bolts.

The result was a quality letterbox that looked right on the door and was properly fitted.

What This Job Demonstrates

  • Preparation matters: Removing old silicone and cleaning the opening helps achieve a better finish.

  • Measure before cutting: Marking the areas that needed adjustment helped avoid unnecessarily enlarging the opening.

  • Dry-fit before securing: Checking the letterbox first confirmed that it would sit correctly.

  • Fixings must suit the door: The bolts needed shortening to match the installation.

  • Appearance and function both matter: A replacement should be properly secured and complement the existing door.

Conclusion

This Bearsden job involved replacing an old, poorly secured letterbox with a new two-piece fitting.

After removing the original letterbox and cleaning away the silicone, I carefully adjusted the opening, checked the replacement in position and shortened the fixing bolts to suit the thickness of the door.

The two sections were then secured tightly together, leaving a smart, professional finish that complemented the door.

A good installation is about more than fitting a replacement part. It's about preparing the opening, getting the measurements right and making sure the finished component is properly secured.

The customer had contacted A.L.S. Locksmiths about a letterbox replacement and lock change, and this part of the work resulted in a much neater letterbox installation.
