When a uPVC or composite door drops, twists, or moves out of position, the hooks, rollers, and deadbolts no longer line up correctly with the keeps on the frame. Every time the handle is lifted, extra force is required to operate the mechanism.
Over time, this additional strain wears out the gearbox and locking points until something eventually breaks.

- Door catching the frame
- Handles difficult to lift
- Keys becoming stiff to turn
- Having to push or pull the door to lock it
Failed Gearboxes
The gearbox is the central component of a multipoint lock and controls the operation of the entire mechanism.
Every time the door is locked or unlocked, the gearbox is working. After years of use, internal springs, cams, and moving parts can wear out or break.
Common symptoms include:
- Handle lifts but nothing happens
- Key turns but the lock doesn't operate
- Locking points won't retract
- Door won't lock or unlock
Seized Hooks and Locking Points
Hooks, rollers, mushrooms, and deadbolts can become stiff or seized through wear, corrosion, dirt build-up, or lack of maintenance.
When this happens, the gearbox must work harder to move them. Eventually, the gearbox becomes overloaded and fails.
Poorly Cut Keys
A badly cut key can damage the lock cylinder over time.
As the cylinder becomes harder to operate, additional force is often applied to the key and handle. This extra strain is transferred into the locking mechanism and gearbox.
